LET THE FARM WORK BEGIN!

Thanks to our good friend & beloved market farmer Ben, we found some land in the South Valley of Albuquerque to start our farm!
FINALLLLLLLY we are so stoked to share this news! Everything about this just feels right. As the wise say, "trust your gut" - my gut is resonating with excitement!

...that also means we will no longer have the time/energy to commit to Rent-A-Coop.  We've always felt like it was just our 'starter project' while we searched for land & resources to get the farm going.  Of course it is with a heavy heart that we let this project rest.  It was our eccentric entrance into the community that is now like family to us, it was our first project together (beginning only 2 months after we met) & we made some incredible friends along the way!  We could bring it back someday, though it will probably take on a different form...who knows, life is cyclical.  Though unlike most I find comfort in change, it means your still alive, still able to roll with the punches.

Since the Mile-Hi Farmers' Market has ended for the season there has been very little time to rest.  I started a second job to keep us smooth sailing, so that Cameron can leave the co-op to work full time on getting everything built & planted before the first chicken gets to the land.  We are hunkering down for the first year of starting our own business, without the safety net of city job paychecks.  Though not so long ago we were both young & broke students, trying to make $400 last us a whole month - him here & me in France...you don't live through that without gaining some skills in thriftiness, we managed & now we will manage better together.  Either way we couldn't go on just living without giving this thing a try, its so close we can taste it...and it tastes like chicken!

Joel with some of his turkeys
We are currently reading books by Joel Salatin a huge inspiration to us, and when I say inspiration I mean we've pretty much decided our first born will be named Joel or Joelle - THIS is the level of respect we have for the man, farmer, author!  Its incredible how on track he makes us feel, that the future we imagine is attainable, and that what we are doing will better our community, our society, and our Earth.

We've both, singularly, had pretty major shifts in consciousness over the past 5 years, and we believe we aren't alone in feeling we are standing at a global turning point.

  • A shift back to local because we've seen how the 'little guy' gets crushed in the global economy.
  • A shift back to natural because the correlation between industrial food & prescription drug use is real.
  • A shift back to integrity because we weren't born to work, consume, & die while pushing aside our principals & virtues to survive.

At least these are the changes we are hoping for, as these are the changes we've made in our own lives and we are reaping the benefits already...(as in my last post) change yourself, change the world!

soooo LET THE FARM WORK BEGIN! we couldn't ask for a better gift, a better opportunity, or a better life*

*forever grateful

Trusting the natural process - eggs

Cameron & I love Rent-A-Coop and love all the incredible people we meet because of it, it hasn't even been 1 year yet and we've had over 25 renters already!  That's 25 different families and personalities we've happily come in contact with, and made some relationships that we never see coming to an end. Only in the 'land of opportunity' the beautiful USA could we have this business...seriously I've told my friends in Europe about it and they think I'm crazy, the response is: "You could never do that in __ (insert European country here) _!"  Its true we as a nation are free-thinkers, capitalists, and all a bit eccentric compared to our ancestors in the Old World! classic Nob Hill, Route 66 As a nation we are accustomed to high productivity and rapid results , just look around there's drive-thrus on every corner, there's all-you-can-eat buffets, there's 24-hour shopping centers, etc.  If you've ever been subjected to ...

How Rent-A-Coop works (the most informational post)

Every farmers market, every phone call, every email we do the spiel.  I was trying to avoid being so business-minded on this blog - but who am I kidding, the very creation of this blog shows how proud of our business we really are.   So for any of you unaware of what Renegade Poultry or Renegade Rent-A-Coop is, this one's for you...  We are a two-person team working towards building a local, organic, hormone/antibiotic-free poultry farm here in New Mexico for the local community (a real emphasis on local ).   This would be "The Renegade Poultry Project" which really only sprouted in Cameron's mind less than a year ago.  In its infancy stages, we are currently looking for land hopefully in the Sandia mountains East of Albuquerque to avoid the summer heat at city-level.  We have most of the vision sorted out so far, at least how we would like the farm to function.  I doubt that what we plan is what will be implemented to a tee, if we...

Mile-Hi Farmers' Market: Vendor Roll-Call

The feeling after a good market day is it's own kind of feeling, one of accomplishment but also the feeling that a miracle took place.  Every week its a difficult balance to obtain - a very important vendor can't make it which I know will disappoint a certain number of market customers who came just for that vendor's product.  But it could also be, the folks who are coming to put on that week's activity "completely forgot".  The market days when I don't wake up to 7 missed calls, or there isn't a poor turn-out due to the heat or rain, this is when it feels like a miracle...when all the moving parts line up and charge ahead, which is happening more and more often!  When the vibe (and I don't abuse this word by using it often) is one of satisfaction, comfort, & ease - which is exactly the type of feeling I'm trying to produce each week.  At my dream farmers' market, I come to buy fresh, organic food & artisanal goods, meet my n...
