Summer-time-grind...our kind of disco!

'Tis the season...
Everyone gets all green-thumbed, outdoorsy, and turns into the grill-master - so what better for the backyard than some local fauna, by local we mean ABQ raised chickens (not too close to the grill though, hmm!)

We got a hand full of sign-ups recently, so back to the good 'ol No Sleep routine...so with the recent heat we've decided to take up the Spanish art of the siesta, though instead of spending the night drinking at the disco, its to the workshop for a whole other kind of disco (there is of course still beer, music & lots of dancing, ask Cameron about that- viva Nuevo México!)

Recent projects:

'Home Sweet Home' brought to the Mile-Hi Farmers' Market last week and dropped off to a renter's backyard after!
You guessed it: 'Home Sweet Home Coop'

ode to the magic & traditions in the New Mexican wind

Red or Green...red for this one - Ristra

'Chickens in Space' the inspiration for this came in a letter from my dear friend David :) because who wouldn't love that idea: a chicken in anti-gravity, could they still lay eggs, come on NASA do it!
We will be bringing this to the market this Sunday 6/21, then dropping it off after the market to a new renter, come check it out!

swirl galaxy on the front - Cameron painted the door!

'Mint Julep' coop, told you the workshop is where we party (because as if we actually have time to 'go out') - can't go wrong with bourbon & mint in my book!
We dropped off this coop just this afternoon from our workshop to our renter's workshop downtown.

Note : Cameron works full time as a butcher/meat & cheese manager at the Co-op so a job that requires heavy lifting, precision cutting, math, and running up and down stairs all day - then he comes home and continues heavy lifting, clamping, sawing, hammering, painting, etc. everyday.  I work full-time too but the tattoo shop is much more 'à la cool'
Cameron is my hero & the hardest working man I know...

...after my Dad of course, who is celebrating 20 years as a business owner this year!
My forever favorite night shirts, and now painting shirts, with "Commercial Carpet Care" printed across the front in bold blue.  The photo tacked up in his office for at least 15 years of me wearing one of those big t-shirts and his shoes, carrying his briefcase around the house as a little girl.  I grew up believing that everyone's dad owned a business, that it was something normal...it wasn't until much older and even still now that I understand that it takes serious guts and a killer motivation to weather the bullshit and constantly swim upstream.  Now we have an experienced business-adviser for our business, I'd take that over a doctor, or lawyer, or whatever everyone's dad does, any day.  To you (because I know you are reading this) the original Renegade Dad, I love you and respect the hell out of you - we can only hope our budding business can be as successful as yours someday <3
Happy Father's Day, I appreciate you more than you could ever know.

~forever grateful

How Rent-A-Coop works (the most informational post)

Every farmers market, every phone call, every email we do the spiel.  I was trying to avoid being so business-minded on this blog - but who am I kidding, the very creation of this blog shows how proud of our business we really are.   So for any of you unaware of what Renegade Poultry or Renegade Rent-A-Coop is, this one's for you...  We are a two-person team working towards building a local, organic, hormone/antibiotic-free poultry farm here in New Mexico for the local community (a real emphasis on local ).   This would be "The Renegade Poultry Project" which really only sprouted in Cameron's mind less than a year ago.  In its infancy stages, we are currently looking for land hopefully in the Sandia mountains East of Albuquerque to avoid the summer heat at city-level.  We have most of the vision sorted out so far, at least how we would like the farm to function.  I doubt that what we plan is what will be implemented to a tee, if we have learned anything so

The First 3 Months

...the farm work began, and it hasn't stopped or slowed at all! *note the date of the last post Oh man, want to hear about the most trying 3 months of our lives, read on... The learning curve has been steep, going from 5 chicks to 350 chicks - its like a whole other animal, its a small herd.  The psychology of a small group of chicks vs a larger group is nothing alike.  Same goes for 4 week old chickens, and 8 week old chickens, 5 is fun - 350 is insane...at least at first. I never look forward to the holiday season, but this one was particularly complicated. Not sure if it was the planets aligned in a specific sort of way or just the culmination of several small things that resulted in an epic shit-storm!  Looking back it was probably all the anticipation and fear of a HUGE life change, an opportunity we've been longing for finally about to begin.  January 1st came quickly, we had the first couple of weeks planned out because Cameron really only had to focus on b

Learning from the "Best in the West" !

The last farm location not working out was really the best thing that could have happened to us... ...as we are currently living in the Rio Grande Valley, not even half a mile from the Rio Grande on the FIRST EVER certified organic poultry farm in the USA , Pollo Real.  Pollo Real has been doing Pastured Poultry since 1996 (20 YEARS) and has set a standard for pastured poultry operations across the country.  Looking back, we are wondering why we didn't come here first when we have such a historic farm and incredibly knowledgeable farmer, Tom, an hour away from Albuquerque?!  This is the older, experienced farmer we were meant to learn from...he knows everything about poultry. We met Tom a few months ago and things really moved fast, things had to move fast - he'd been looking for a couple to come help out on the farm and we were farm-less, job-less, and not ready to give up on our dream.  We met right after we closed things down at the last farm location, sal
