"The Coop Troop" Albuquerque the Magazine

Its so surreal to see ourselves in this top selling magazine in Albuquerque...Albuquerque the Magazine!

We knew it was coming, we had the interview with Tom back in October and had basically forgot all that we had talked about over the hour and a half he stayed to chat.  That's mostly what I was wondering about, 'how the hell is he gonna fit all of what was said into a page or two of magazine?'

The photo shoot was in mid January, at way too early in the morning for me.  Cameron likes to schedule things so that I have to wake up with the rooster to be functional by the time of scheduled event, torture for this night-owl...'conditioning' for chicken-farming he says.  The photographer brought his big lights and took tons of pictures, in the workshop, in the backyard, in the chicken run, all over really.  We had a bit of a bet going as to which set of photos would be published in anticipation for last night.

Last night was the release party for the March edition, which is the "Top Docs" issue - the health issue, so we fit right in.  I had to go represent us solo, Cam was on his management shift and couldn't change it.  Walking up to the event, held at a plastic surgery center, I see Camille who just signed herself up to rent chickens from us.  She was our first contact at the magazine, and a very appreciated one, she passed our story off to Tom.  I got a drink but only because I ran into the bar looking for our free copy of the magazine ;)  once I had it in my hands I started to flip through it frantically until I saw the wooden walls of our workshop.

I'm pretty good at speed-reading so used my ability to devour the article.  Tom did a great job of capturing the essence of who we are and what service we provide to the community.  We are so grateful for the opportunity to get our story out to all of the magazine's readers.  Everyone I met at the release party really seemed to like the idea and wished us luck.  Its the positive reaction to what we are doing that keeps us going.  Everyone laughs first then starts shooting the questions, all while keeping a smile on their face.
We love it.

This is only the beginning!

forever grateful

Trusting the natural process - eggs

Cameron & I love Rent-A-Coop and love all the incredible people we meet because of it, it hasn't even been 1 year yet and we've had over 25 renters already!  That's 25 different families and personalities we've happily come in contact with, and made some relationships that we never see coming to an end. Only in the 'land of opportunity' the beautiful USA could we have this business...seriously I've told my friends in Europe about it and they think I'm crazy, the response is: "You could never do that in __ (insert European country here) _!"  Its true we as a nation are free-thinkers, capitalists, and all a bit eccentric compared to our ancestors in the Old World! classic Nob Hill, Route 66 As a nation we are accustomed to high productivity and rapid results , just look around there's drive-thrus on every corner, there's all-you-can-eat buffets, there's 24-hour shopping centers, etc.  If you've ever been subjected to ...

How Rent-A-Coop works (the most informational post)

Every farmers market, every phone call, every email we do the spiel.  I was trying to avoid being so business-minded on this blog - but who am I kidding, the very creation of this blog shows how proud of our business we really are.   So for any of you unaware of what Renegade Poultry or Renegade Rent-A-Coop is, this one's for you...  We are a two-person team working towards building a local, organic, hormone/antibiotic-free poultry farm here in New Mexico for the local community (a real emphasis on local ).   This would be "The Renegade Poultry Project" which really only sprouted in Cameron's mind less than a year ago.  In its infancy stages, we are currently looking for land hopefully in the Sandia mountains East of Albuquerque to avoid the summer heat at city-level.  We have most of the vision sorted out so far, at least how we would like the farm to function.  I doubt that what we plan is what will be implemented to a tee, if we...

Firm decision: there will be sunflowers!

It's been a while friends, we have been keeping busy! For the past few months we've been on the look out and have been scouring central NM for a small piece of land, even for someone with some land we can use or rent out an acre. there will be lots of sunflowers  Its an exciting time and we find ourselves having endless conversations about what we are envisioning or just bouncing ideas off each other, in the car, at the farmers market, in bed, texting while the other is at work just because we need them to know this incredible idea that just hatched a trove of possibilities ASAP!  We are both hours deep into farming books by the best & most practiced.  We draw out plans while out getting dinner on the back of whatever piece of writable surface I can find in my purse, and can barely eat with all the thinking going on.  We research the cheapest ways to acquire or build the equipment we will need.  Using our combined abilities to the fullest capacity and...
